Welcome to the Nursery!
Welcome to our nursery!
Welcome
We are so proud of our babies that we’ve created this nursery section to share more information and photos with you. The following descriptions and pictures will hopefully reflect our dedication of what we do best……..RAISE EXCEPTIONAL BABIES!

We prefer the REAL moms to feed their babies for at least the first few weeks. Like any other living creature, the real moms do a much better job of supplying their babies what they need to ensure their futures are healthy ones! After the babies are removed from the nest boxes, they’re fat, happy and healthy. I thoroughly appreciate the joy of taking over where “mom” left off.

These photos were taken after the babies were moved into the nursery. The babies are kept in temperature and humidity controlled brooders until they’re fully feathered and no longer need additional heat. The babies are handfed, cared for round the clock and cuddled constantly throughout the day.

At 5 weeks of age, the babies are offered a large variety of soft foods multiple times per day. It isn’t long before they are eating EVERYTHING they can get their little beaks on! Solomon Island Eclectus are notorious for being GARBAGE DISPOSALS! This is also the age that their personalities begin to bloom! There are as many different personalities as there are babies, but one thing they all have in common is that they’re the SWEETEST babies in the world!

At approximately 8 weeks of age, the babies are fully feathered and ready to leave the brooders and enter the weaning cages, which I refer to as “playpens”. At this age, the playpens are equipped with plenty of toys rotated constantly, fresh food and soft perches to practice on. When the babies are approximately 10 weeks old, wood and sandy perches are added to the playpens. This is also the age that they begin to fly!
From 10 weeks old and up, the babies are introduced to playstands and begin to tweak their piloting skills. They love to explore on their own at this age. It’s great fun TRYING to keep up with them!

The next stage is also the last one at Rock Creek Aviary. This is when the babies are fully weaned, very secure with themselves and ready to go to their new homes. This COULD be a very sad time for both the babies and myself if it weren’t for the fact that all of my babies have been adopted by the most wonderful parents! I am forever grateful to all the exceptional new parents that have made room in their families for my babies, giving them the best life imaginable!

We hope you’ve enjoyed your visit to our nursery!
